Trevon Diggs trade rumors: Cowboys cornerback draws NFC interest

DALLAS — As usual, Dallas is once again at the center of NFL trade speculation, with All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs emerging as a potential trade candidate.

As the 2025 season approaches, interest from NFC rivals like the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams has fueled rumors that Diggs could be on the move, possibly for a surprisingly modest return.

Trevon Diggs’ Injury Concerns and Contract Situation

Trevon Diggs, once hailed as one of the league’s premier playmakers at cornerback, has seen his career trajectory complicated by injuries.

After earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors early in his career, Diggs has suffered back-to-back season-ending knee injuries, limiting him to just 13 appearances over the last two seasons.

Since signing a five-year, $97 million extension, he has missed 21 games, raising questions about his long-term durability and value to the Cowboys.

“Both cornerback Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys may be better off without each other,” Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski said. “That may come across as counterintuitive considering how good Diggs has been when he’s healthy, but he hasn’t been healthy over the last two seasons.”

Potential Trade Value and Suitors

Despite his injury history, Diggs’ talent when healthy is undeniable.

He led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021 and remains one of the league’s most dynamic defensive backs.

However, the trade value for Diggs appears to have plummeted, with speculation that Dallas might only fetch a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for the 26-year-old cornerback.

This low asking price has caught the attention of teams in need of secondary help.

The New Orleans Saints, who traded Marshon Lattimore and lost Paulson Adebo in free agency, are seen as an ideal landing spot.

“The Saints need to add a cornerback after trading Marshon Lattimore a year ago and losing Paulson Adebo in free agency this offseason,” Saints analyst Zach Pressnell said. “While there are a few solid options left in free agency, Diggs could be the best fit for the Saints.

“New Orleans isn’t in a spot to swing a trade for an aging veteran like Jalen Ramsey. Somebody like Diggs, who’s 26 years old, would make a lot more sense.”

The Los Angeles Rams have also been linked to Diggs, as they look to upgrade their cornerback room after missing out on free agents and draft prospects.

A proposed trade would send Diggs to the Rams for a sixth-round pick, freeing up cap space for Dallas and giving Los Angeles a young, high-upside defender.

Jalen Ramsey: A Parallel Storyline

While Diggs’ name circulates in trade talks, another high-profile cornerback, Jalen Ramsey, has also been the subject of rumors.

The Miami Dolphins are reportedly exploring trade options for Ramsey, with the Cowboys, Rams, and Commanders named as potential suitors.

However, Dallas may be reluctant to part with further draft capital after an active offseason, and the financial commitment required for Ramsey could be prohibitive.

Ramsey, a three-time first-team All-Pro and Super Bowl champion, remains a durable and productive player, starting all 17 games for Miami in 2024.

His contract, however, includes $24.2 million guaranteed in 2025, making him a pricier option than Diggs.

Cowboys’ Cornerback Depth and Future Outlook

The Cowboys’ willingness to entertain offers for Diggs is partly due to their investment in young talent.

Dallas has spent recent draft capital on cornerbacks Caelen Carson and Shavon Revel, and traded for former first-round pick Kaiir Elam this offseason.

With DaRon Bland also due for a new contract soon, the Cowboys may prioritize financial flexibility and the development of their younger players.

As Sobleski observed, “A trade would help the Cowboys free up money to re-sign [DaRon] Bland, who is a free agent after the 2025 campaign, or for the mega-extension that edge-rusher Micah Parsons will inevitably sign.”

What Happens Next?

With training camp on the horizon and Diggs expected to miss the start of the season, the Cowboys could wait to see how their young cornerbacks perform before making a final decision.

If the new additions excel, Diggs could become a prime trade deadline candidate, especially for teams like the Saints or Rams in need of a boost in the secondary.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Trevon Diggs remains in Dallas or finds a fresh start elsewhere in the NFC.
